Coombe Farm: A Nature Retreat on the Sussex/Surrey border.

gifted stay

Driving down a leafy lane that soon starts to feel like a footpath you’d be forgiven for wandering where you’re going. But following Alice’s, the owner of Coombe Farm, instructions you soon turn into a gateway and park on a bit of grass and then the magic of this hut become clear. With a large field that is wild and textured and a cosy shepherds hut complete with woodburner, you are propelled into the most natural of settings.

I’ve stayed at Coombe Farm twice now and each time what has stuck me is the feeling of not needing to go anywhere. The first time I stayed I had ideas of documenting all the local locals and villages but the heavens opened and never closed. But with that scenario came surrender and I realised the magic of Coombe Farm is the hut itself. It’s the perfect escape for those wanting to get away from it all and just be a bit wild for a few days. The owls at night are a testament to the natural therapy of the space and the footpath that leads to many dense tree lined walks man you never need to go far. The foraging opportunities are abundant too.

But if that all feels like too much, light the fire, toast marshmallows, disappear under the crisp white duvet with a book, light the wood burner and meditate, journal or plan or cook a storm in the kitchen hut. Do whatever you feel like but let the pressure soften every day life fall away while you ground and just be.

Nearby in Rogate there’s a general stores and a little further down the road is a farm shop, accompanied by a gift and interiors shop. And in local towns like Liss, Haslemere and Liphook you’ll have everything you need. Also, don’t miss the farm shop at Cowdray Estate. But I don’t feel like the point of a stay at Coombe Farm is packing things in. It’s a place to be, not have any timeline and just wander round breathing in the air.

If you do want to venture out there are many places to explore including many forest walks around Rake, Harting Downs, Cowdray Estate and Midhurst. This is just scratching the surface.
