Gardens: The Famous Garden of Charleston Farmhouse.

For as long as I’ve lived in Sussex I’ve been saying I need to get to Charleston. I drive by so often and am always rushing to a commission or back for the dog. So when a commission from the team at Charleston landed in my inbox I was over the moon to not only get to see it, but also get an insight in the behind the scenes too.

Since then, I’ve returned to Charleston numerous times, magnetised by the history, its creative soul and incredible garden. I was privileged enough to be given access to the garden and everything that goes in behind the scenes one early morning in May.

In the run up to the morning, I was envisaging magical light as we’d had a run of the sunniest of days. Only for me to see grey skies on my drive over at 7am. But I think it adds to the ambience and gives me an excuse for instalment two which will come mid summer.

One of my favourite things about Charleston is noticing how much the inside of the house connects with the outside. That was definitely no accident and only testament to great creative minds that occupied the house.

In the weeks that followed this shoot, the irises retreated and the alliums burst into abundance. You can see some of those scenes here.
